Raising awareness in the community & funds for the environmental defense fund

spring 2025

Chance No. 2 was one of ~400 artists with work displayed at the 2025 Somerville Open Studios weekend. One of my upcycled denim bags was showcased in the Somerville Museum, and I had a kiosk at the Somerville Armory.

As people visited the Somerville Armory kiosk, and swung by to look at my hand-crafted bags, I had the opportunity to discuss the problem of textile waste, climate change, and the benefits of upcycling. I sold over 20 upcycled bags and sparked countless climate conversations. Since Chance No. 2 donates 50% of profits to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), that is a win in a few ways. Excited to see you at the next arts fair!

chance no. 2 selected for the somerville artwear fashion show

spring 2025

Somerville Open Studios (SOS) held a fashion show titled “Beyond the Pattern” to kick off open studios weekend. I was thrilled to be selected for the show! The Artwear Fashion Show was held at the beautiful Crystal Ballroom in Davis Square on Friday, May 2nd 2025. The line was out the door; excitement was palpable. My sewing mentor, Damaris Thomas, came to the show to cheer me on. What a thrill to have the opportunity to share this success with her!

Chance No. 2 was one of twelve designers that participated in the fashion show. I had the opportunity to model some of my latest clothing designs and raise awareness on the environmental issues associated with the fashion industry. I want to thank my Chance No. 2 models (and awesome cousins) Arden and Tilly. We also had the pleasure of being photographed by Grace DuVal as a gift to the designers; thank you Grace for these beautiful photographs visible all across my website!

Chance No. 2 is participating as a vendor in the Somerville Open Studios (SOS) art festival. In preparation for the event, I organized denim drives to divert textile waste from landfills and used the donated clothes to craft ~30 unique, custom bags. I tried to incorporate unique parts of the clothes straight into each bag to make them quirky and unique, and I think they turned out well. I love that each bag has its own story and personality. I plan to sell the bags and use them as discussion pieces to speak with SOS attendees about fashion, the environment and the circular economy. Also, as part of being an artist in Open Studios, I selected one piece to be on display at the Somerville Museum.

spring 2024

We did it! Chance No. 2 sold its first batch of custom-made denim skirts. Each of the ten skirts is custom and one-of-a-kind, incorporating materials special to each customer. While they took a while time to make, it was so rewarding to see the reactions and appreciation from my customers as I delivered them their custom made skirts. It also felt great to be able to donate $278 (50% of the profit from the skirts) to the Environmental Defense Fund!

first order of 10 custom patchwork denim skirts fulfilled

winter 2023

Chance No. 2 makes it first sale! I was able to complete my first custom made, upcycled skirt and deliver it to my first paying customer. Making the first skirt was definitely a big growing experience with some learning pains. It took a long time, and I am sure that my process can definitely be improved with more efficiency for future skirts. I was happy with the outcome though. The skirt definitely looked unique, I feel confident it will be a conversation starter. Plus, it has so many pockets!

Denim drive in somerville and boston resulting in ~20 pounds of denim diverted from landfills

fall 2023

Chance No. 2 successfully held a clothes/denim donation drive at school, the neighborhood, and from friends and family. I was able to use clothing drive as an opportunity to talk about the harmful impact of fashion and disposable culture surrounding clothes on the environment. In addition to divert clothes from landfills, I am planning to upcycle the clothes from the drive for custom made clothing. I hope to sell these clothes and donate 50% of the profits to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). The EDF is a great organization committed to climate justice, working in the places, on projects and with the people that can make the biggest difference for the environment.

Chance No. 2 FOUNDED by mia brillantes
in somerville, ma. 2023.

I started learning how to sew in 2017, and I’ve fallen in love with the medium since. I’ve always been artistically inclined, but what I absolutely love about sewing is the functionality and wearability of the final products, allowing me to show off my masterpieces. Last Spring Break I decided to create a patchwork jean skirt from several denim scraps I had from previous projects. I received countless compliments on it, and I relished telling people that it was one of my own creations. One of my teachers especially liked it, and asked if I would make her a denim skirt of her own. I constructed her skirt over the Summer Break, and when I delivered it to her at the start of school this year, she suggested that I expand this hobby into a small business for my Personal Project.

This project and venture is deeply personal to me on multiple levels. In regards to the skirts as a form of art, I believe that art is always an expression of some aspect of the artist’s identity, experience, ideas, and so much more. I’ve always been enamored by the arts as a form of self expression and an exploration of how to utilize or break artistic and social conventions. The medium of denim patchwork certainly lends itself to those explorations and expressions, through its expressive fading patterns and bold style. Denim, unlike many other fabrics, is intended to be worn, loved, and faded, leaving each pair of jeans with a unique story. It was this form of storytelling that truly fascinated me in the project. Unfolding, exploring and continuing the story of the jeans is an inspiring concept to begin with. It’s all the more exciting that my art can be displayed and loved by so many people, in such a visible way! The topics of the fashion industry and the climate crisis are also painfully relevant to my life and personal experiences. As a young person I know my future will be defined by the climate crisis and how we as an international society choose to combat it. Because of this, I am inevitably drawn to the topic of the climate crisis and am passionate about learning about it and taking action towards a livable future. I knew that the fashion industry was a big carbon emitter and general polluter, so this project seemed like an exciting, meaningful way to combat climate change. I chose to further the impact of my small business by donating half of the profits towards the Environmental Defense Fund. I hope that the skirts can serve as a reminder and a symbol of the opportunity we have to move past the toxic trends and patterns we find ourselves in (pun intended).
